Loxahatchee River Battlefield Park

Loxahatchee River Battlefield Park is located inside Riverbend Park in Palm Beach Florida

Loxahatchee River Battlefield Park is located in Palm Beach, Florida on 61 acre, it’s huge and beautiful. It’s entrance is through Riverbend Park which is equally beautiful and extensive, and full of fantastic outdoor activities for all age groups. These two parks (adjoining) are of the best municipal parks in Florida we’ve visited. Paddling, equestrian trails, picnic tables and party pavilions, so many family-oriented special events throughout the year.

We decided to visit Battlefield Park in late May, which is the end of their special events season (starts getting very hot after May). In the morning the Loxahatchee Battlefield Preservationists sponsored a lecture by Dr.Edward Petuch, a former professor of 30 years at Florida Atlantic University (FAU). We learned about Florida’s ancient ecology and earliest indigenous  people like the Calusa Indians, and got to see some fantastically significant fossils from the area from camels and mammoths and tigers (oh my!).  We sat at the picnic tables under a huge oak tree on a beautiful Saturday morning and learned we don’t know nearly enough about Florida’s real history, and how truly interesting it is! SO MANY FUN FACTS LEARNED! Here’s one: did you know Florida’s water level was about 60 feet ABOVE what it is now, just 150,000 years ago??
